@cindysirinya : The headline that started it all... 3 years ago today I was reading my morning paper and came across this headline by authorities for women to “not dress sexy” and they will be safe from sexual assault. Although the intention was to protect women, by focusing only on what we wear with no mention of other safety measures or warning to would-be perpetrators, it revealed the extent of rape culture and tolerance for violence against women in this country. By blaming harassment and assault on what a woman was wearing, where she was or if she was drinking, we shift the blame and responsibility from the real culprit of these acts of violence and harassment. It shifts attention away from the real causes of GBV and perpetuates harmful gender stereotypes and myths. The @donttellmehowtodress movement was born out of a moment of anger and frustration. I did not expect my rant (second pic) would go viral and make international headlines which prompted me to then team up with @unwomenasia and other partners to create the Social Power Exhibition Against Sexual Assault where we displayed ordinary clothing worn by survivors at the time of their assault. This year marks the 3rd anniversary of #donttellmehowtodress and we are launching the online version next month as well as a new hashtag challenge with @tiktokthailandofficial. Please stay tuned!
